The birthday of Queen Sirikit is celebrated as Mother’s Day in Thailand. I was invited to go to a small school in Surin, Thailand, to see the Mother’s Day celebration there. While sitting in the audience I snapped this shot and instantly knew that it was going to be a good one.
I love this image of a little girl holding her younger sister, behind her stands their mother, and hidden in shadow behind them all we see the face of an old woman. I like to pretend that she is their grandmother. The dappled light enhances the colorful clothing they wear, yet their faces all express a sadness that I believe lives deep within all Thai people. Even the baby girl appears deeply concerned about something. To me, a feeling of energy travels up the arm of the young girl, through the arm of her older sister, then further through the arm of the mother behind. This is probably my favorite of all the photos I have ever taken.
