I’ve always enjoyed photographing reflections on water. In this case the subject is houseboats occupied by the Vietnamese boat people on the Tonle Sap River near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The Cambodians consider the boat people to be second-class citizens. Being a second-class citizen in a country as impoverished as Cambodia is really saying something!
I felt a little uncomfortable taking this photo. It is after all a set of peoples homes. As I was sitting in my tour boat snapping photos, I couldn’t help wondering how I would react if a busload of people came down my suburban street and started photographing me mowing my lawn. It was an eerie thought.
