Native to Africa, most Proteas are found in the Cape region of South Africa. Proteas are members of the Proteaceae family, which includes Australia’s native Banksias. As such, they appear to flourish in Tasmania, and the Proteas garden at Hobart’s Botanic Gardens is quite spectacular.
It is almost hard to believe that the flowers of the Proteas are real; they look like the plastic creation of some Japanese artist. It’s a challenge to take a bad photo of a Proteas flower. This one happened to be in a particularly perfect state of opening.
