A nearby sign reads “Prasat Phra Wihan Temple is Khmer’s Soul”. Prasat Phra Wihan is an Angkor period temple ruin on the Thai-Cambodian border. Like Khmer’s soul, it lies in ruins, but is slowly being repaired. At its heart, just beyond this courtyard, lies a structure that has been rededicated as a Buddhist temple.
I wonder if the renaissance Italians uncovering the collapsed ruins of ancient Greece felt as I feel looking at this photo. There is something sad yet beautiful about the pillars covered in lichens, some standing, some fallen, some preparing to fall. Ruined glory.
